Quitting smoking in pregnancy tied to benefit for baby

Infants have a three to four times higher risk of dying from sudden infant death syndrome, or “crib death,” if their mothers smoke during and after pregnancy. Children exposed to secondhand smoke also have more ear infections, pneumonia, bronchitis, asthma and other health problems. The new study included 1,774 women who were part of the “Smoke-free Newborn” study conducted in Copenhagen, Denmark, between 1996 and 1999. Twice during pregnancy, researchers surveyed women about their smoking status. To double-check whether women who said they quit smoking really did, their saliva was checked for cotinine – created when nicotine is broken down in the body.

Drinking During Pregnancy: Emily Oster, Author of ‘Expecting Better’, Explains Why It Might Be OK (VIDEO)

Yet her findings indicated conclusions all across the board. In her book, she addresses all kind of pregnancy myths using her statistical background, and delves into the question of whether or not pregnant women can drink while expecting. Her conclusion: Yes, in moderation. Although all the pregnancy organizations in the United States recommend a policy of abstinence, similar organizations in different countries indicate occasional drinking is fine, she writes. She explains that after sifting through reliable studies , a couple drinks per week is fine in the first trimester and no more than one 4-ounce drink a day in the last two trimesters. So why do some studies turn their back on alcohol completely?

There seems to be a sort of hurdle she cant get over to begin helping herself. I know she reads your column and respects your advice. I find her as beautiful as the day we met years ago, but I am so worried she is killing herself with inactivity and food. Worried This is the answer no one wants to hear, but your wife has chosen this path, and you cannot force her off it, even when you have reason to believe its hurtling her toward a premature death. There are things you can try, of course, and it sounds as if youve tried them all, for all the right reasons promoting exercise-related couple time and eating better together are the two best, for sure.

Hair-Loss Drugs’ Big Growth in China

When I looked at the numbers, I was astonished, says CEO Maria Halasz, referring to Chinas market potential. Halasz said she suffered from excessive hair loss herself in the past and is counting on women being her main customers based on her observations of hair-thinning in cities such as Shanghai. Going up and down the escalators, you really see women, even thirtysomething women, where theres thinning on top of the head, she says. About 21percent of adult males and 6percent of females in China suffer from hormone-driven hair loss, a study by the Peking University Peoples Hospital published in the British Journal of Dermatology in 2010 found.

Natural Treatments for Hair Loss

Roberts takes a holistic view of the problem. Sometimes medication is needed, but she often tries more general methods first — such as the following: Nutrition Sally Kravich, MS, CNHP, a holistic nutritionist and author, finds in her practice that “vanity is a good way to inspire people (to eat better) — we all want shiny eyes and radiant hair and skin .” She encourages her patients to get nutrients and minerals from the food they eat. Unfortunately, many people don’t have the best diets . Protein is important to strengthen hair and promote growth. The recommended daily allowance is about two to three 3-oz. servings of meat or a combination of four to five servings of dairy and beans. Kravich tells patients dealing with hair loss to include nuts and seeds, eggs, and fish in their diets.

AF Still Measuring Waist Rule for Fitness Test

He noted during an interview in March — just two months into his job as the Air Forces top enlisted leader — that reviewing the waist-measurement component of the Air Force physical fitness test was one of his priorities. Airmen long have complained that the waist measurement is unfair because it puts airmen with larger body frames at a disadvantage, even if they can pass the other components of the test. More than 90 percent of airmen are passing the physical fitness test, but fitness-related discharges have skyrocketed in recent years. Between 2007 and 2012, the number of airmen discharged for fitness reasons has increased by 400 percent, according to figures from the Air Force. In 2007, there were 156 fitness-related discharges, compared with 1,372 in 2012. Those discharges started to sharply rise in 2010, when the Air Force updated guidance to make airmen more accountable for their fitness, officials say. Changes included requiring a commander to make a recommendation for separation or retention when an airman fails the physical fitness test four times in a 24-month period, and requiring minimum scores for each component of the test, with failure to meet the minimum in any single component resulting in a failure.

Skin care- The simpler the better

Skin care- The simpler the better

Here are the skincare basics which will help you to maintain your skin fairness. Choose the right face wash When choosing a face wash, always buy a milder one because it will not irritate or harm your skin. Use a face wash or a gentle cleanser.f you have oily, acne prone skin or dry or mature skin, try a cleanser that has an alpha hydroxy acid, such as lactic acid or buffered glycolic acid that will chemically exfoliate the skin without irritation. Sun screen No matter your age or skin colour, choose a sunscreen or a moisturiser with a consistency that you like with at least SPF 30 that has UVA or UVB protection. Apply 15 minutes before going out in the sun. For oily or acne prone skin, opt for an oil-free sunblock or light gel-based lotions. If you have combination skin, use a light fluid-formula sunscreen during the daytime, and focus on treating the dry areas at night.
